The first thing of being a responsible reptile owner is does not take your decision lightly. It is such a large responsibility, one that you will have to live with for many years. To get a reptile just to look with your friends is not good judgment.

Many people will buy a reptile on sheer whim. Just to buy a reptile because it looks pretty or is different than other pets can lead to a lot of heartache and trouble. Your reptile will be in captivity most of the time. It will be at your beckon call for all its needs. Be sure you want that responsibility. Without you taking care of it, it will surely die in your care.

To not care for your reptile may lead to harsh conditions, ones that your reptile cannot cope with. These reptiles have feelings, just like you do. Do not think they do not. They just cannot show their emotions like you or a dog or cat. They feel pain just like you do.

When you get your reptile put it in the atmosphere he is used to. One that he can thrive in. He must be in one that he can live comfortably and grow. Be sure to give him space to grow. They do get bigger.

Some thoughts before buying your reptile; Will you have enough space in your home to let your reptile grow, move around. Will you be able to put your reptile in the surroundings he is used to? Native to him. How much money are you willing to spend, and where will you buy your reptile? Remember the initial cost is not all you will spend.

Find pictures of the reptile you want. Be sure you know what it is supposed to look like before buying one from a pet store. So many reptiles are mistreated, be wary. Maybe you could try a licensed breeder. They must maintain a certain code to be and stay one. Check records, are they up to date? Have the reptiles had their shots? Ask if you can pet and just move around the reptile. Does it move when you touch him?

To be a good responsible reptile owner entails many facets of having a pet. You must care, water and feed them. But more than that, love them, play with them. Be sure you want a reptile instead of a dog, cat or turtle. It is such a joy to own a pet or reptile. They will bring you hours of fun.

If you have any doubt whatsoever, walk away. Walk away if you do not have faith in the pet store or breeder. You could be asking for a lot of trouble if you second guess yourself.

If you have to give your reptile away, be sure you know who you’re giving it to. He has been with you and knows you. He knows you feed him, love him and play with him. Someone new might not treat him that well. Give him the respect with a new owner that you gave him yourself.

Too many animals and reptiles go by the wayside because of irresponsible owners. Do not fall in that category.
