Can anyone find a connection between The Color Purple and The Catcher in the Rye?
I need to do a paper for English comparing two books and I've switched my books so many times I'm stuck with The Color Purple and The Catcher in the Rye. I don't know if anyone will be able to find the connection... but if you could it would REALLY help. Thanks. (:
I would go with the theme of being an outsider searching for a sense of identity or belonging. Holden is a loner who's been kicked out of multiple schools; he distances himself from all the "phoneys" around him and can't seem to find a place where he really fits in. Celie is an outsider in her own home when she marries her husband and struggles throughout the novel to find her place in the world. So maybe discovery of self through alienation could be your theme.
A good area of comparison might be that Holden, a wealthy white male, alienates himself by choice, while Celie, a poor black female, has alienation forced upon her due to her race, gender, and poverty.
