How do i set up a gecko enclosure?
I've just bought a gecko and an enclosure for it.
The enclosure is this - http://www.reptiles.swelluk.com/img/shop/original/glass_terrarium_set.jpg
its 45 x 45 x 45 cm
i dont know where i should fit the 26.5 x 28 cm heat mat.
Where should i put the heat mat, the heat light for it, the water dish, cave and bed box for it ?
its a leopard gecko . any diagrams would be helpful . thanks
The vivarium isn't really big enough for an adult Leo, ground space is more important than height and I would recommend an enclosure no smaller than 60 x 30 x 30cm.
Do you have a thermostat and a good digital thermometer (with two probes)? Leopard geckos are primarily terrestrial and use heat from the ground to aid digestion, therefore the heat mat should be placed where the gecko spends most of its time.
The water dish should be put on the cool end of the vivarium, if it is placed on the warm end then it will simply evaporate within a few hours. As for the hides you will need at least two of these, one should be placed on either side of the vivarium. A moist hide is also recommended and this should be filled with some damp sphagnum moss or kitchen paper to aid shedding. You will also need calcium and multivitamin supplements. I use Komodo cricket dust and Nutrobal.
