Spot Lamp

How do I cut down the shine on a newly painted table lamp base?
I spray painted a lamp w/satin paint. It dried too shiney. I tried some fine sandpaper on it; that was a mistake because the surface is not completely smooth, so I accidentally removed some ot the paint on the high spots.
Was wondering if there isn't something liquid that would do the trick.
Sounds like repainting it would solve all the problems. Use flat paint.
